New Appointment to Emergency Management Tutor
The Emergency Management Department and Tai Poutini Polytechnic would like to welcome Noel Mingins, who has taken up the position of Emergency Managment Tutor as from the 24 Jan 2012.
Noels skills within Emergency Management are very diverse having been involved from a voluntary capacity as a Civil Defence Volunteer, volunteer Fire Fighter since 1975, in more recent times within the roles as an Em...ergency Management Coordinator for the Ruapehu District Council where the role requires skills in both Civil Defence Emergency Management and as the Principal Rural Fire Officer. Previous to that role a short term with EMD where Ihe setup the first cohort for the Diploma in Applied Emergency Management and prior to that as the Emergency Management Officer for the Tararua District Council where the two functions of CDEM and Rural Fire were also required. Within the Emergency Management sector the ability to train and pass on information is a requisite that is required to ensure that communities are better prepared and becoming more ‘Resilient’ to the hazards which they may have to interact with.
He holds a number of National Certificates in Rural Fire and a Post Graduate Diploma Emergency Services Management through Massey University

New Appointment to Programme Leader (SAR)
Tai Poutini Polytechnic and the Emergency Management Department would like to welcome:-
Warrick Price, who has taken up the above position as of the 4 Jan 2012.
Warrick previously worked for a private education provider, Trade and Commerce in Levin as the programme manager for Course Xtreme, a youth course that offers the students employment skills and NCEA level 1&2. He has been running this course in Levin for the last 6 years and managed a small campus with 5 staff.
Warrick has qualifications in: Diploma in Adult Education-Level 6, Certificate 4098 Assessing in the work place, Diploma in Outdoor Leadership, Certificate in Search and Rescue, Current MSC Outdoor First Aid Certificate.
He is a volunteer with Horowhenua Search and Rescue Group and has been in this group for 20 + years. Currently he is the Vice President Adviser to the police and Group representative to the National organisation, has recently been selected for the National SAR group and also works very closely with the Mountain Safety Council helping to run courses introducing beginners to the bush in a safe and supported environment. He is a qualified Bush 1&2 Instructor and helps run a variety of courses for the public.

New Appointments to Emergency Management Department
Tai Poutini Polytechnic and the Emergency Management Department would like to welcome:-
Mike Owen, who has taken up the position of Head of Department as of the 19 December 2011.
Mike comes to us from a career with the NZ Defence Force. He joined the Army as a fire fighter and progressed through various trade appointments to be the Fire Master (Chief Fire Officer) at Linton Camp. Mike went on to be the EM advisor to the Chief of Defence Force and was involved in HADR in the SW Pacific and SW Asia. Over the last 2 years Mike was in charge of the Army Fire Service. Mike has been a member of the National Rural Fire Advisory Committee and the Rural Fire Research Advisory Committee and is currently on the board of EMQual.
Also like to welcome in the New Year:
Warrick Price, who will take up the position of Programme Leader SAR on the 4 January 2012.
Noel Mingins, who will take up the position of CDEM Tutor on the 23 January 2012

Coming in 2012
Tai Poutini Polytechnic's new Land Search and Rescue Programme.
From 1 March 2012, Tai Poutini Polytechnic will launch it's new Land Search and Rescue qualifications as well as move it's delivered of the Land SAR Programme to it's Emergency Management Department based in the Palmerston North Campus. The following core courses previously known as;
- TCA (Track and Clue Awareness)
- Search Methods
- Tracking
- CIMS for SAR
- Managing Initial Response
will be available for bookings from the 1 March 2012.
