Diploma in Applied Emergency Management (Level 6) [DipAEM]

Introduction

The Diploma in Applied Emergency Management is a new qualification for those seeking to enter the emergency management field or develop their skills and knowledge in this area. “Emergency management is the managerial function charged with creating the framework within which communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and cope with disasters” (IAEM, 2008).

The qualification has been developed in conjunction with international and domestic experts in emergency management and enables students to use their own country or another country of their choice for many of the topic areas ensuring a truly global perspective in contemporary emergency management.

The programme is delivered part time over a two, three or four year period with papers comprising short block courses and distance/online activities. It is anticipated that block courses will be attended by students with a range of backgrounds and experience, further adding to the diversity of discussion and learning.

Linkages

The Diploma in Applied Emergency Management (DipAEM) uses two papers from the compulsory schedule of the New Zealand Diploma in Business. Students may choose to take up to two further business papers as part of their elective within the Diploma in Applied Emergency Management. Business papers can be completed through any NZDipBus accredited institution and transferred to the DipAEM.

The DipAEM is aligned to the International Association of Emergency Managers’ Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) credential. The AEM is an entry level professional certification for emergency managers that is internationally recognised. Depending on the study options taken, in most cases students should be able to meet the requirements of the AEM.

Upon completion (and achieving satisfactory grades), students have the option to continue to higher education with graduate studies such as those offered by Massey University. The DipAEM introduces students to academic skills such as academic writing, research and referencing so it provides an ideal entry point into academic study in emergency management.

Business papers from other government accredited institutions (such as Universities, Community Colleges, TAFEs etc) may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning against the NZ Diploma in Business Studies papers (530, 560, 630, 636) where such papers match at least 80% of the respective NZDipBus paper. A fee shall apply for such cases.

Fees

Fees are charged on a paper by paper basis. For information regarding the fees associated with the individual papers please proceed to the paper descriptors.
